Opening day at the Races......
Well, here we go again. After a shaky morning with lots of thunder, lightening and rain...it all cleared for a bright, beautiful and plenty warm day. Those little cherubs had rosy cheeks from playing so hard! The crowd was totally engaged.
Resort race winner...
Five year old Silas Holz walked away with the big W this week representing Kee-Nee Moo-Sha Resort, pictured here with Angelia Sawyers of All Seasons Resort. Photo submitted.
We volunteers remarked we have seldom seen a crowd with sooo much enthusiasm!! We couldn’t have held one more Mom or Dad for the hula hoops. Same for Gramas and Grampas. No one was taking a back seat!! The turtles were even rambunctious!! Their little legs were moving fast....with winners going over the yellow line in minutes. Ed, our announcer, was calling the races as if these turtles were thoroughbred horses....to the delight of everyone. What a show!!
Turtle race champion
This week’s Grand Winner was five year old Kinley Havlik from Elma, IA. Photo submitted.
We had slightly over 200 racers, and doing our regular math of 3 other guests with every racer...we entertained about 800 folks on the streets of Longville. Not bad!!
Slow Poke champion
This week’s Grand Slowpoke Winner was nine year old Desmond Carlson from Barnum, MN. Photo submitted.
Speaking of enthusiasm...our volunteers were and are amazing!! They arrive about 12:30 to meet their buddies, check out their game and set things up. The street is literally turned into a mini state fair!! Their day ends about 3:30...sometimes later. It is hard work and on a hot day can take a lot out of a person. But, they are troopers and would not give it up!! Some have even adopted certain games...so they can be sure to be there each week!! How is that for loyalty?
We are a small town, a village. And it takes a village..and we would not have it any other way. Come by and say Hi!! We’ll see you at the races.
