Stuart Memorial Park Playground enhancement fundraising project

When Longville resident Beth Tobiason visited Stuart Memorial Park in 2021 with a child who has Autism, she noticed that the child had difficulty engaging with the playground equipment. This spawned an idea that perhaps other children may be having similar issues and an upgrade/addition to the park would be more inclusive to more children. She then approached the Longville City Council and the Park and Recreation Committee to ask permission to look at ways to enhance the playground so it can serve individuals of all abilities.

After much research into vendors, land use, history of the playground and finances, a desirable plan was developed and approved by the Parks and Recreation Committee. The goal is to provide for expansion of the playground, add an adaptive swing, upgrade the slide station, add sensory panels, and a merry-go-round for individuals with mobility concerns. Another important enhancement is the addition of some new ground cover so adults and children can access the playground. Some benches will be added and a picnic area.

Plans for Longville’s Stuart Memorial Park playground enhancement will include adaptive equipment for kids with disabilities as well as ground cover that improves access for those with mobility issues.

The Parks and Recreation Committee, along with others, has been fundraising and seeking donations from government agencies, county, granting organizations, businesses and the public. Currently, approximately 90% of the money needed to fund this $150,000 improvement has been secured. More is needed to push this project across the finish line. Construction is scheduled to begin with site preparation this fall with installation of equipment and ground cover in spring 2025.

The Committee appreciates all previous donations from individuals and organizations for their generosity...If you would like to help in the dream of making everyone feel welcome, to feel included, please consider donating to this important project. The City of Longville is the financial representative for the project. Donations can be sent to: City of Longville, Box 217, Longville, MN 56655. In the memo please write Playground Project.
