James “Jim” Alden Eddy

b. July 16, 1931 d. Feb. 22, 2024

James “Jim” Alden Eddy passed away Thursday, February 22 at Sheyenne Crossing in West Fargo, North Dakota.

Jim was born on July 16, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Jason and Christine (Graves) Eddy. In 1949, Jim graduated from Marshall High School in Minneapolis and went on to join the Navy in 1951. He served four years as a Navy medic on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt. After his service in the Navy, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1957 with a degree in business.

He then applied and was accepted into the Dayton’s training program and began his career working for this iconic department store in downtown Minneapolis. He started his career as a stock boy in the toy department, then became a buyer in the bath shop, linens, gifts, draperies, and trim-the-tree. He was promoted to group manager in Brookdale and Southdale, and later moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where he became the store manager of Dayton’s in West Acres. He was later promoted to Regional Director of Remote Stores and then returned to his position as General Manager of the Fargo store in 1980. He retired from this position in 1992 after over 35 years of service to the Daytons company. He took pride in being a supportive leader and cared strongly for his associates and his customers. Some of his favorite years with Dayton’s were the years that he spent as the manager of the Fargo store.

Jim married Charlotte Dykema of Roseland, Minnesota, on September 21, 1957. They had three children and lived in Minneapolis from 1957 to 1973, when they moved to Fargo, North Dakota. Their family had strong ties to the Longville, Minnesota area and spent many summer days with family and friends on Lake Inguadona. In 2002, they moved from the family cabin that Jim shared with his brothers and sister and built their own lake home. Jim loved to bring people together at the lake whether that was fishing with his buddies, going for a boat ride, or simply sitting on the dock watching the sun set.

Jim was a true patriot. He loved his country and took much pride in his years of service in the Navy. He cared for his family and was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and he loved his God. He sang in the church choir and participated in Bible study. His favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23. His life embodied charity, humility, and service to others.

Jim is survived by his wife, Charlotte of West Fargo, North Dakota, his daughter, Kim (Dan) Greene of Mora, Minnesota, his son, Jeff Eddy (Jill Winberg) of Maple Grove, Minnesota; grandchildren: Emily Drinka and Michelle Mabus (father Dick Drinka); Heather Heins and Megan Greene; Jacob Eddy, Jayson Eddy, and Jaclyn Hoy (mother Lori Eddy); Jake Winberg and Lexi Winberg; 5 great grandchildren and his sister, Judith O’Brien of Edina, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Keri Riley, three brothers, and his parents.

Jim will be remembered as an advisor, mentor and helper to many. His kind heart, big hugs, and laughter will be deeply missed by friends and family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Longville, Minnesota.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Sheyenne Crossing for their compassion and care during Jim’s final weeks.
