The Cass County Land Department contracted with Nienow Cultural Consultants LLC to evaluate the condition of the late 19th century Munroe Turntable logging railroad site. The location of this site was previously investigated and mapped in a phase one study. The most recent evaluation was completed in December of 2023 with the intention of determining if the area was a candidate to be enrolled in the National Register of Historic Places. The most recent survey conducted by five archaeologists and eight volunteers determined the site is eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The fieldwork and excavation lead to the discovery of 324 artifacts from the late 19th century. A few examples included a locomotive drive shaft, locket, ammunition casings and buttons. These artifacts will be stored at the Minnesota History Center in St Paul MN. Cass County will employ the best management practices to maintain the integrity of the site.
This project was funded in part by Cass County Land Department and the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as part of Legacy Grant No. 2205-27182, ‘Munroe Turntable Roundhouse Phase 2, a legacy grant administrated by the Minnesota Historical Society and awarded to Cass County Land Department.
