John G. Weins

b. Aug. 28, 1937 d. April 3, 2024


   It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John G. Weins, on April 3, 2024. John was 86 years old and died peacefully at his home in Mesa, AZ. John was born in So. St. Paul, MN to Galen & Ione Nelson Weins. A graduate of So. St. Paul High School, he continued his education at Northwestern College in Minneapolis, MN and Macalester College in St. Paul, MN graduating with an education degree. His first teaching jobs were at Hinckley, MN and Coon Rapids, MN. He then moved into the position of Communication/Public Relations Coordinator at Anoka-Hennepin School District. He retired in 1994 and moved to his home in Longville, MN. 

    In 1995 he married Sandy Grewe at the Longville Community Church. He shared 29 years of love and companionship with Sandy. They started spending their winters in Arizona in 1996. Together they built a life with adventure, laughter and unwavering support for one another. John was a devoted father to his daughter, Dawn Olson, and her family.

   Throughout John’s life, he pursued many endeavors, such as working in education and communication/public relations, working as Activity Director for the Longville Chamber of Commerce, directing the Sunland Village Foundation in Mesa, AZ and running and loving the smallest resort in Minnesota on Heffron Lake. John was a man of deep faith. His devotion to his beliefs was evident in his life from his relationships to his work. He was dedicated to serving the community, especially during his years in the Longville area.  

   John had a passion for writing, singing, tennis, biking, hunting, hiking and was a supporter of the MN Vikings and all Minnesota sports teams. He had an overwhelming love for Tall Pine Lodge and property on Heffron Lake.  

   John is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughter Dawn Olson, son-in-law Scott Olson, sister-in-law Claudia Weins, and grandsons Reid and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James. 

   A Celebration of Life will be held on June 8, 2024 at Salem Lutheran Church in Longville, MN at 11 a.m., visitation at 10 a.m. May he rest in peace, knowing he made an impact on the lives of many. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Salem Lutheran Church, Longville Chamber of Commerce or the charity of your choosing.
