   In conjunction with promoting October Blindness Awareness Month, the Backus Lions are holding their second annual White Cane Day event on Saturday, October 14.

   This is a free event sponsored by the Backus Lions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and held at Godfrey’s store in Backus. This is an informational and hands-on event.  

   Have you ever walked around your house while having a blindfold over your eyes?  Have you ever tried to find something in your “junk drawer” by touch only?  Have you ever walked around with someone who will assist you in using a white cane or walking while using a dog’s guiding harness?  

   No?  Well, October 14 will be your day to experience these things.  This day is a hands-on experience plus there will be handouts on how to ask a blind or visually impaired person if you can be of assistance. Do you know how to identify yourself to them to let them know you are talking to them, you know who they are, and let them know who you are? Do you know your state’s driving laws as they relate to encountering someone using a white cane?

   Have you ever actually felt Braille material? Do you know the Braille alphabet? Here is your opportunity to touch, see, and learn.

   We also have some activities for children to do as well as activity sheets for them to take home.

   The Backus Lions look forward to meeting you and letting you experience some of the world of the blind or visually impaired. We will be set up inside Godfrey’s store, so weather will not prevent you experiencing these events and learning something about the world of blind or visually impaired individuals.
