Welks attend the Longville/Remer School District for 76 years. Little did John (Punchy) Welk realize the day he arrived with his fishing buddies at Lien’s Resort in Brevik Minnesota that he was the one who would start us on a path to create a record. When he walked in to register and pay, he met (in his words) “the most beautiful red head he had ever seen”. That would be my Mother, Estelle. They married and over time they had eight children, four boys and four girls. Four would carry on the Welk name. In the next generation, four would carry it: Shawn, Bryan, Brent and J.J. The next generation would have Rylie and Calvin. Marilyn the oldest of the first generation started school in 1945. Calvin will graduate in 2029. As of today, and three generations later, there has been a Welk in the school system for 76 years. Now that has to be a record! Submitted by Gwen Welk Workman.
