An estimated 23.2 percent of Americans, or more than 60.7 million people formally volunteered with organizations between September 2020 and 2021. In total, these volunteers served an estimated 4.1 billion hours with an economic value of $122.9 billion, according to americorps.gov.

It’s hard to believe that only 1 in 4 people make the time to volunteer when you consider all the benefits you can derive from giving of your time and talents. Volunteering in your community is not only beneficial to the individuals involved, but it is a critical part of our quality of life, as it drives many of the services, activities, and festivals that we enjoy throughout the year. Here are some excellent reasons to get out there and volunteer:

Volunteering makes a difference and strengthens communities. Having an active volunteer base can contribute to resiliency during a time of need or crisis.

Volunteering keeps people connected as they transition from school to work, work to family, work to retirement. It also contributes to a sense of identity for a community as well as a stronger feeling of working together.

Volunteering improves physical health and reduces stress. It can decrease depression by increasing social interaction and help you widen your support network by making new friends. It helps us stay active, live in the present and makes us happy. Volunteering is good for your mind and your body.

Volunteering can advance your career. It gives you the opportunity to practice important job skills, such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, project planning, and organization.

Volunteering provides a sense of purpose and increases self-confidence. People who give back to their communities experience greater life satisfaction, higher self-esteem, and a greater ability to manage adversity. And it’s FUN! Volunteering brings fulfillment to your life.

How to get involved: There are many opportunities to volunteer in your area – just look around. If you aren’t sure, try calling Faith in Action for Cass County at 218-675-5435. Faith in Action is a volunteer program that matches volunteer time and talents with needs in the community. Volunteers can choose what, when and how much they want to do. Most needs are for transportation, food delivery, light homemaking or chore help, friendly visit or phone calls, or building ramps or basic home repairs. And if you are looking for something else, we can point you in the right direction.

Like many programs, Faith in Action volunteers are asked to complete registration and background check forms and attend a fun orientation. Volunteers receive scheduling, ongoing support, fun events, liability insurance, and mileage reimbursement. New volunteer orientation is scheduled monthly, or can be done by Zoom at your convenience.

Faith in Action volunteers know that they aren’t just driving or helping. They are providing dignity and hope for folks who are struggling to stay in their homes and communities.

Volunteer Lorraine Enos from Hackensack has often said, “This is the best ‘job’ I’ve ever had! I just love meeting new people.”

Volunteer Caryl Allen from Pine River shared, “It seems like we are always laughing about something – we have fun, and people are so appreciative.”

“I’ve had a wonderful life,” Volunteer John Parr from Walker stated. “When I retired, I wanted to give back to the community – giving back all the good things that I have received.”

Volunteer Randy Krecklau said “I like the feeling that I am accomplishing something in the community and helping others. It can be hard to ask for help and Faith in Action makes it easier to ask because they line everything up.”

Call Faith in Action at 218-675-5435 and consider volunteering in your community. You’ll be making the world a better place. And remember, Doing Good is Good for You too!!
