The regular board meeting held Wednesday, July 19 was a typical summer meeting with light attendance and routine adoptions of school policies, acceptance of bids and donations, which were given by Northland Lions Club in the amount of $1,200 for band and $100 from David and Sharon Rouse for Trap Club.

Associate Pastor at Harvest Church of God in Remer, Ryder Pepin shared a concern with the board regarding lack of student participation in Wednesday Church activities. It was noted in past years Wednesday was always considered a “Church” day and all after-school events were finished by 5:30 p.m. so youth could attend fun activities provided by Harvest Church of God. Pepin mentioned in recent years attendance has diminished drastically during basketball season and was wondering if they could work with the school on making sure practices end by 5:30 p.m. Superintendent Mary Yakibchuk stated she would have Activities Director Janessa Green reach out to Pepin regarding his concern and see if there was any way the school could work with the Church.

Yakibchuk then gave a brief report to the board regarding a few things happening within the school. It was stated the school recently received a supply of NARCAN which will be kept in the nurses office. This supply was donated through a program with a requirement that school staff receive training on administering the product. Yakibchuk also mentioned due to new legislative law that went into effect July 1, the school is required to have NARCAN on site. The board was also informed the bus garage project was almost complete, good progress was being made with the outdoor early education classroom and summer tutoring was going well.

   In other Board action:

   • Approved the hire of Rod Anderson as Science teacher with a start date of Aug. 28.

   • Approved the 2023-2025 Memorandum of Employment with Executive Secretary Tina Anderson and Community Education Program Coordinator Jennifer Welk.

   • Approved the Long Term Facilities Maintenance plan for fiscal year 2024.

   • Approved the renewal of the contract with Arrowhead Regional Computing Consortium for Business Manager services with Lori Backlund.

   • Approved the contract with CAR, Inc. for seal coating of the front parking lot for approximately $25,000.

The board has scheduled the following meetings: the work session, Wed., Aug 2 at 5:30 p.m. and a regular meeting, Wed., Aug. 16 at 5:30 p.m. all meetings are held at Northland High School.
