Community Fellowship dinner in Longville Aug. 23
The Buzz Lilyquist Community Fellowship Dinner will be at Salem Lutheran Church in Longville on Wednesday, August 23rd from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. There is no cost. The menu includes ham and scalloped potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, bread and pie (including a la mode), coffee, lemonade and milk. There will be brief introductory remarks before the dinner is served.
To recognize and celebrate men’s fellowship past and present, Salem’s Men’s Fellowship Ministry is sponsoring this dinner. The past is recognized and celebrated by remembering long-time men’s fellowship leader the late Clinton (Buzz) Lilyquist who started men’s fellowship going back to the old log framed church on Highway 84 in Longville. In the early 2000’s, Buzz Lilyquist along with leaders of men’s groups at other churches in Longville took turns during the year to offer dinners and local speakers for the men and their spouses. These ecumenical get-togethers provided the opportunity for the members of Longville churches to foster understanding and friendships with each other.
In recent years, the men’s fellowship ministry at Salem has pursued activities and events suggested by a 2018 survey of the congregation’s men. Currently a five-member action team has followed up on those survey results in a variety of ways. These have included free men’s fellowship sponsored presentations on topics of interest to men and women in the Longville lakes area. Topics have included snowcross racing, sustainable fishing and fish preparation, big game hunting and fishing, tree care and cutting, military vehicle preservation, local history, impact of climate change and invasive species on our lakes, and estate planning. Outdoors advocate, TV producer and renowned story teller Ron Schara recently gave one of these presentations in Salem’s fellowship hall.
For members of the congregation, their families and friends, the men’s fellowship ministry engages in other activities as well. These include a planning lunch meeting in May, providing fresh altar flowers every Sunday during the summer, restarting the Salem Sunday Suppers the last Sunday of each month at various restaurants, an annual shore dinner of fried fish and the trimmings, attendance at a local high school football game with a pre-game dinner and an outing to YMCA Camp Olson.
Everyone is welcome. While there is no cost for the dinner, freewill donations are appreciated. Salem Lutheran Church is located at 1340 County Road 5 in Longville.
