Hot and Sunny for Turtle Race Day!

Go figure... the reporting of the weather is like gambling...sometimes you get it right!

After a turbulent Tuesday, with heavy, dark, fast moving clouds with lots of thunder claps, starting at about 11:00 a.m., by the end of the day we had reports of rain from 4 inches up by 39 on Leech, to 2 inches at my house on Woman, to 1 inch over on IXL. The last storm moving through about 6:oo p.m. And, none of this was predicted... but we needed the rain!

Leila Sadoughi, age 1 and a half, from Seattle, WA, walked away with the big W this week representing Thunder Lake Lodge, pictured here with her family and Angelia Sawyers of All Seasons Resort. Photo submitted.

Wednesday, Turtle Race Day, opened to a glorious sunrise, a strikingly beautiful blue sky, sprinkled with white puffy clouds, framed in pinks and oranges. God is Good! And, we are off to the races!

This week’s Grand Winner was 13 year old Layla Krueckeberg from Akeley, MN. Photo submitted.

Our guests were especially rowdy, and we love that! When our announcer called for children to come out and hula hoop, I never saw so many youngsters. We could hardly fit them in the ring! And, with the proper goading, the big boys, poppas, came out and gave it a whirl. We always say when the fellows are out there...don’t blink, because in that instant most will drop their hoops. But they humor us, and each week the lads come out so we can tease them. That’s what happens on vacation... you let your family see you letting your hair down. And that goes for the dances as well. From the Hokey Pokey, to the Chicken Dance, to the Macarena, to the crowd’s favorite, the YMCA... the ring was full with infants, kids, moms, dads, grandma and grandpa... isn’t that great? Where else could this happen? That’s why generations of families keep coming back. If someone is here for the first time, it’s because someone else, who has been here, brings them. Like, Elyse Farnsworth (isn’t that a cool name) who tells me she has been winning the Slow Poke Award since 1981. She was here with her kids yesterday, and won the Slow Poke again... always a bridesmaid! She is the 4th generation coming to Longville and belongs to the Christenson family on Long Lake! And, another guest coming back is the granddaughter of the woman who got Longville’s turtle races declared officially “The Turtle Race Capital of the World.” Cool, huh? She is Keri Stevens, staying at Minnee Teepee Resort. As a child, her grandma had a place on Bungey Bay of Woman Lake.  It was then, as a member of the Minnesota Legislature, she officially had this honor bestowed on Longville.

This week’s Grand Slowpoke champion was 14 year old Avenlea Greenfield from Rosco, IL. Photo submitted.

So there you go, our update for the week. With only 2 races to go, we can hardly believe how fast time has flown by. P.S. The Lions will be serving delicious sweet corn and dogs on Saturday in the Docksider’s parking lot and did you hear.... there is a new farmer’s market in town on Tuesday’s, next door to the Common Grounds 218, go take a peek! Come alive in Longville!
