Northland School Board: Northland homecoming receives new consideration
Over a dozen parents and high school seniors showed up for a special board meeting held Monday, Sept. 26 to discuss the future of homecoming.
During the previous week students and parents had learned a tough decision had been made to not have a homecoming court due to lack of eligible students. Lots of rumors and emotions rose during the week due to this decision leading to the student leadership advisor stepping down. The board then decided to hold a special meeting to hear from the public and to discuss how to move forward with homecoming.
During the meeting several parents and students spoke, all stating they felt the decision made by the student leadership team to not have a court was unfair to the high school seniors. Especially those seniors that had rearranged their schedules to attend classes at Northland to be eligible. Discussion also circulated concerning the eligibility requirements, and that those requirements were possibly too strict due to the district having small classes.
After the public comments, the board members also shared their thoughts with some stating concern for the social media posts that went around. The board said they understand the frustration and the need for people to state their thoughts, but requested in the future people consider the impact their criticism has on the district as a whole. The board requested that people reach out to them before posting on social media.
With numerous parents stating they would be willing to volunteer so the students had a traditional homecoming week, board member Linda Knox stated she would participate on a committee as a board representative. Nomination will move forward and be announced later this week.
