Hackensack Lending Library needs your help
The Hackensack log cabin lending library was built in 1936 by the Holmberg brothers working for the WPA (Works Progress Administration.) It was built with native timber and houses a floor-to-ceiling split rock fireplace. It was built to be a conservation/community building providing services to the many visitors to our lake region.
The building is currently owned by the city of Hackensack. During its history it was the home of two teachers, a dental office and served as the Hackensack Chamber of Commerce. It has been a lending library for 21 years.
A group of library volunteers is working to have the log cabin listed on the Historic National Register. These volunteers are working with the Minnesota State Historical Society through grants to fund the many steps needed to achieve this status.
Time and weather have taken their toll on the condition of the structure - many of the logs are deteriorating. A rigorous restoration will be necessary to return the log cabin to its original condition.
Grants are available to assist with the log cabin restoration expenses but they may not be sufficient. The log cabin can use your help! Contributions can be made to: Hackensack Lending Library (memo line: Building Fund) PO Box 13, Hackensack, MN 56452
