Since May of 2020, the Backus Lions have been collecting plastic wrap keeping about 2,600 pounds of plastic out of local landfills.
Currently the Backus Lions have saved enough plastic to earn five Trex® Outdoor Furniture benches and are working on their sixth.
Of the benches earned, three of them have been donated to the Pine Mountaineer Senior Center in Backus to replace the older wooden benches outside their building. The fourth bench will be donated to the Foothills Christian Academy in Backus in appreciation for letting the Lions use part of their building for storing and sorting the plastic. It is anticipated that the fifth bench will be donated to the Country Garden Center in Backus as a thank you for donating patio urns for the Lions Fly-In Pancake Breakfast raffles.
The Backus Lions want to acknowledge all the local businesses who have allowed them to put plastic drop boxes in their buildings. A special thank you to Godfrey’s for giving them all the stretch wrap from their merchandise orders.
