100 Years Ago

December 1, 1922

  Nearly all the children in the Sanford, Gilmer, and Pilz homes are sick with the chicken pox. Dr. Haberlin went out Monday and examined all the school children at Trelipe. He was also called to attend the Zumbrunnen, Harris and Klein children who were sick with tonsilitis. 

   Fred and Lou Harris are hauling their household goods and farm machinery to Remer where they will ship it to their new homes in Wisconsin. Both boys have bought a large farm there. 

   Carl Zumbrunnen, who is working north of Remer, spent Friday with the home folks.  

 75 Years Ago

November 28, 1947

   Charles Campbell returned to Federal Dam Saturday evening from Guam, where he is employed. He will return to Guam after a short visit with his family.

   Longville was shocked Saturday by the death of Severt Murphy, pioneer hunter and trapper. He came to the Longville area in 1891 at seven years of age. He married Hazel Carver and they had nine children.

   Neil Dewey and Don Dewey exchanged farms at Turtle Lake township.

50 Years Ago

November 23, 1972

   George Kline died at age 92 on November 14th. He is the father of Longville residents Cy Kline and Helen Jordan; Gertrude Robinson of Boy River; Marie Lundgren, Mae Robinson, Maybell Finney and Benjamin Richland all of Washington, 

   Monte McKeig opened a new garage and service station in Federal Dam. Barney Durkee is the new owner of the Liquor Store. They will have a Grand Opening together.

   Dianne Archer and Kathryn Grossman completed the Practical Nursing Program at Brainerd and received their LPN licensure.

25 Years Ago

November 25, 1997 

   Arnold Peterson died November 22nd. He married Audrey Mendel in 1950 at Sauk Rapids where he lived before moving to Longville in 1978. He was a crane operator for various companies before his retirement in 1987.

   Robert G. Nicklason died November 19th at the age of 71. He was born in Shovel Lake to Gotfred and Rose Colby Nicklason. He married Frances Affeldt in 1959. Due to his father’s illness, he returned to Remer in 1955 and became president of the Security State Bank in 1962.

   Frederick Phipps, 80, died November 15th. He married Margie Davis in 1939 and moved to Longville in 1947. He was a farmer, iron-ore miner, custodian of Longville School, raised award-winning Appaloosa horses, and was an outdoorsman, gardener, lapidarian, and stained-glass craftsman.
