100 Years Ago

Jan. 27, 1922

   Happy Showalter sawed wood for Mrs. W. Thompson and Grandpa Ford one day last week.

   On account of bad roads, we did not get our mail Monday.

   The farmers club met at the home of Crandall’s Saturday and the meeting was well attended. 

   Jonas Buchite’s goat froze up Sunday night.

   John McAllister, Pine River rescued George A. Walters when the latter was nearly drowned in Sand Lake on July 26, 1919, and has been awarded the Carnegie medal for his act of bravery.  

   Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hasbrouck and sons of Hackensack are now at Walker while Roy is assisting with the plumbing work on the new Chase hotel.

 75 Years Ago

Jan. 24, 1947

  Martha Charlotte Webster married Charlie Rice and they moved to the Ponto Lake area in 1899 with their children John and Stella. They then moved to Backus in 1905.

   There will be a benefit dance at Federal Dam for Everett Fairbanks, Jr. who lost all his chickens and other property due to a fire.

   The hospital in Walker will close its doors to bed patients due to a lack of nursing help. Any nurse wanting to work, contact us now.

50 Years Ago

Jan. 27, 1972

   Mr. and Mrs. Hal Ayres flew in from Los Angeles on Friday to spend several days at their Woodhaven Resort on Blackwater Lake.

   The Monte McKeig family had dinner with Mabel McKeig on Friday evening. The honored guest was Casey who was two years old.

   All the employees at “The Fish” were entertained at a late Christmas party on Monday. Warren put on a real feast for everyone.

Jan. 21, 1996

  Irma R. Spicer died January 7th at Remer. She moved to Remer in 1979 and was active in the Toys for Tots program for the past ten years.

   Aaron Jackson, a junior at Northland High, broke the school record for the highest individual points in a basketball game, 44 points.

   Jim and Mary Jane Lewis are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house at their home on Inguadona.
