Alec Wake, representing the Northland Student Leadership team, highlighted the upcoming Sno Daze week highlights to the Northland School Board in their Feb. 16th regular meeting.
There will be dress up days and events going on all week, Feb. 28 to March 4. Monday is camo/blaze orange day, Tuesday is America day, Wednesday is class color day, along with the annual Budrow Dodgeball Tournament at 6 p.m., Thursday is Adam Sandler day, and Friday is school spirit day.
On Friday, the Winter Minute-to-Win-It Olympics begins at 1 p.m. and goes to the end of the school day. There will be a banquet in the commons starting at 7 p.m., followed by a semi-formal dance from 8-11 p.m. Wake also shared that, “The beginning of the quarter and semester seems to have started pretty well for most students.”
Assistant Principal and Activities Director Janessa Green made a proposal about having two sections for kindergarten through third grade and one section for fourth to sixth grade, starting next school year. Green said that she wanted smaller classes for children still learning to read, giving students more one-on-one time with the teachers.
Board chair Marc Ruyak discussed the proposed property tax abatement. Included in this abatement is the construction and improvement to parking lots at various sites in the district. This project will cost approximately $650,000. Motion was made to approve the abatement and hold a public hearing, to be held during the next regular board meeting.
In other board action:
• Approved the hire of Laura Flood as School Secretary with a start date of Feb. 22.
• Accepted the following donations for the senior class: $100 from Lake Country Power; $250 from Thunder Lake Realty; $250 from Ruyak Enterprises; $100 from First National Bank and gift certificates for pizza from Cenex.
The board scheduled a regular Thurs. meeting and the public hearing on March 17 at 5:30 p.m. All meetings are held at Northland High School.
